The Perfect Compliment to your Matcha
Help preserve the freshness of Ooika’s fresh-ground Matcha with our heavy-weight, UV protected glass jars. Just the right size to hold 20 grams, and not much more. This minimizes the empty space in the jar that will oxidize your Matcha. A tight fitting lid with a compressible cap eliminates the chance of off odors getting into the jar. Thick glass walls reduce heat transfer when taking from the fridge.
How to Store Your Matcha
Matcha is highly sensitive to light, bad odors, oxygen, time and warm temperatures. After stone-milling, Matcha will naturally lose it’s freshness over time even under the best conditions. With proper storage, we can prolong this freshness.
Keeping Matcha Fresh
Ooika recommends keeping your Matcha in a tight fitting, UV-coated jar. Please keep the jar within a small tupperware container, and keep it in the fridgerator. The tupperware will help buffer the Matcha within the Jar from bad odors that might arrise in your refrigerator.
When you’d like to have some Matcha simple take some Matcha from the Jar and replace it quickly back in the refrigerator.
Freezer VS Refrigerator
We do not recommend storing your Matcha in the freezer due to the risk of sublimation and ambient warm humidity settling into the freezing cold Matcha powder when opened. While freezers have less odor than a refrigerator, the tupperware buffer can help minimize this risk.
How Long does Matcha Stay Fresh for?
Ooika recommends consuming Matcha left out at room temperature within one month of milling, and within three months if kept in a refrigerator.
Stone-milled Matcha is at higher risk of losing it’s freshness due to it’s increase surface area from being milled into smaller particle size. Matcha beings to oxidize, lose volatile odorants (flavor and aroma molecules) and lose nutritional value immediately after milling.
Research indicates that within hours this degradation process has begun. After six months of milling, over 30% of the antioxidant load has been decayed. Assuming perfect storing conditions, such as using the Ooika Matcha jar, this process can be reduced.
